HOW BEING UNCOMFORTABLE CAN HELP US GROW

Fullyalive101 is a conversation about health and wellness in mind, body and spirit. We believe that joy, success, and happiness all come from curating a life that explores fun, unique, and creative ways to live FULLY ALIVE, to live the life you were born to
If I was never uncomfortable, I wouldn’t know the edge of my limitations, and I wouldn’t have learned to push those edges out a little further, every day.
If you want to grow personally, professionally, or in any realm of life, you will have to rise above the fear of everything that makes us uncomfortable. A new task or new challenge often confronts us with a feeling of insecurity. We feel inadequate because we don’t know how. We haven’t done something, or learned or tried something, there it is the fear of the unknown, fear of failure. The only way I know how to overcome that feeling is to be ok with being uncomfortable, and doing it anyways.
My face flushed when my children asked me to be in a cannonball competition put on by a radio station at a pool. I had never done a cannonball in my life, and not in a swimsuit with hundreds of people watching me. Before I could decline, my son said, “Please, just try, you always tell us too.” There was that advice-you-give –a-nine-year old bouncing right back at me, and I knew he was right.
After coming in second place, the experience taught me a valuable lesson: I am awesome at cannonballs. Beyond this, I enjoyed them. It taught me that I can’t just play to strengths I already know I have, if I want to discover new ones. Facing new challenges, and overcoming them, can build on your self-esteem, add new energy and excitement to your life and propel you forward in areas you have previously stood-back from.
