Fullyalive101 is a conversation about health and wellness in mind, body and spirit. We believe that joy, success, and happiness all come from curating a life that explores fun, unique and creative ways to live FULLY ALIVE, to live the life you were born to.
“My focus is to forget the pain of life. Forget the pain, mock the pain, reduce it and laugh.”
- Jim Carey
Real life can have moments of sadness and heartache – and sometimes, it can be full of laughter, and really, really funny along the way. Not only can humor help us cope, it can help us experience a higher quality of life, reduce stress, encourage relaxation, and provide pain relief.
The Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH) defines humor therapy as “… any intervention that promotes health and wellness by stimulating a playful discovery, expression or appreciation of the absurdity or incongruity of life's situations. This intervention may enhance health or be used as a complementary treatment of illness to facilitate healing or coping, whether physical, emotional, cognitive, social or spiritual.” Here we have listed ways humor can help us heal.
Sitting in the hospital with my son, I finally heard him laugh for the first time in days, and that is when I knew he was going to be ok, and so was I.
There is something about laughter that lets us know that the pain is going to pass.
It can instantly remove us from our negative thoughts and feelings and transport us to a better state of mind, and give us the feeling that life will have good moments again.
3.) Breaking up the monotony.
I had a really boring job before, as most of us have. I used the opportunity to get really creative with practical jokes and my sense of humor. I started looking forward to going to work because I knew everyone was going to end up laughing all day. Most of us would rather be waiting for…anything… with someone who can make us laugh oppose to someone who is just going to sit and painfully pass the time. Be this person.
4.) A good laugh can reduce stress.
Stress is a problem for most people. Laughing can counteract it by shifting the stress we are experiencing in our body to a joyful feeling. This gives our body a reprieve from constant worry, negative thoughts and feelings. Our heart rate can slow, we can breathe deeper, and smile.
5.) Humor can allow us to be excellent communicators.
Comedy isn’t often thought of as a legitimate communication tool, yet I believe it has huge value in this area. A carefully crafted joke allows you to more gently express truths that normally may be uncomfortable to say, or even harder to hear. As someone that attempts to be careful with others feelings, this can be an excellent tool. I recently went out with a comedian friend, and was blown away by how effective their communication was with others through jokes. When service was bad, it was much more comfortable (for everyone) to let it be known with humor. It was taken well and their face went from fear of complaint or confrontation to a warmth, and a smile.
